We are poisoning the world that we live in, causing the sixth mass extinction. This poisoning is affecting all areas of our bodies and minds, causing a host of modern illnesses which cross the arbitrary lines between body and mind, personal and social, physical and spiritual. The modern medical establishment is oriented toward mechanical and pharmaceutical solutions within a patriarchal system which sets the doctor up as the modern day priest and the patient up to be disempowered, disrespected and pathologized. What most of us need to find real health, is real care. We need to be listened to from the heart, respected in our individual journey of healing and also guided from a good use of logic and the scientific method integrated with ancient wisdom and spirituality. We need guides on the path of healing who balance knowledge with compassion, patience and humility.
I have been accompanying clients on the path of learning about and healing from modern complex illness since 1993. Long before research, such as the Kaiser Adverse Childhood Experiences study proved the connection between childhood trauma and long term health issues, I intuited that connection. Because of my own childhood, I knew that I would have to understand this connection, or loose my own health. So the field of psychoneuroimmunology became a focus for me right at the beginning of my career. My first couple of clients in this category had fibromyalgia. For more than a quarter century, I have supported people through finding a diagnosis, struggling to be heard and listened too and navigating various types of treatments as well as the challenges with the medical and insurance professions. I have helped people clear trauma, freeze, or shut down in their nervous systems, and restricting beliefs. I have helped people find what gives them joy and energy in life to balance the brain fog, low energy, anxiety, depression and many other aspects of this sort of illness. I have helped people with difficult diets, confusing differing opinions and diagnoses, and the effects on the brain and the psyche of having various health problems. I am knowledgable about holistic, herbal, nutritional and energetic forms of healing. I have learned a lot from every client and their experiences with tests, doctors, and various traditional and non-traditional treatments.
If you are struggling with insomnia, depression, anxiety, OCD, brain fog, mood swings, emotional volatility, or emotional reactivity, intense PMS or other hormonal issues, auto-immune conditions, chronic gut issues, headaches or back pain, you are dealing with a condition which has both solid physical and emotional components. These issues all have a connection to the GI system, or the “gut” as well as stress and frequently a background of trauma or neglect in childhood. Issues in your emotional life, such as your intimate relationships may be creating a feedback loop involving the gut, inflammation, chronic pain and or your nervous system getting stuck being over activated, shut down, or both at times. Likewise stress in your life is a huge factor in illness or health. Traditional doctors and psychiatrists and counselors typically turn to medication quickly in these cases. Often the medication will mask and even exacerbate the problem. I can help you with natural treatments, diet, supplements, meditation, yoga, stress management, boundaries, communication strategies and many other tools for managing stress and generally navigating these sort of health challenges.
I also integrate an ever deepening knowledge of functional medicine in my work. This includes gut healing, food sensitivities, detox and the like. More and more, people are turning to functional medicine and complimentary modalities to get an actual resolution of the core imbalance rather than simple symptom management and frequently pharmaceutical dependency. Functional medicine is an approach that looks as the body/mind system as intelligent, and symptoms as clues that guide us to the core issues. This often has to do with diet and lifestyle as well as stress. I am not a medical doctor, but I can help you get to the bottom of issues and avoid medications. My goal is to help you listen to your body, find the right medical provider, or team, connect you with resources and support you in getting full, natural, robust health. I can help you clear all sorts of blocks and traumas which may have compromised your system and set you up for health issues going back as far as birth. In addition, I see this journey through a spiritual lens, not just as a burden, but as an opportunity to become more whole, conscious, spiritually integrated and grounded in what is truly important and meaningful in life. I see every symptom as an opportunity to become more present and grounded. So, my work with you can run the gamut from the chemistry of gut healing to esoteric spiritual teachings from thousands of years of working with the mind, heart and awareness.
I have extensive experience helping people with food sensitivities, chronic weight issues, auto-immune disorders, specific things such as histamine intolerance/overload, Lyme disease, adrenal fatigue, HIV/AIDS, cancer, IBS, candida, insomnia, RA, Hashimoto’s, migraines etc. So I know a lot about alternative treatments, local doctors and resources, such as mindfulness/meditation training, self-hypnosis, yoga, herbs, amino acid therapy, and lots about nutrition. I have personally been through the classic story of seeing various providers who were unable to get to the bottom of my issue of insomnia and instead wasted my money and in some cases did damage physically or emotionally. I’m happy to say that I was finally able to get good help and the correct diagnosis; histamine sensitivity, and to come back to health through diet, meditation, yoga and acupuncture. I understand the journey personally and have confidence in helping you navigate your own journey into not just symptom resolution, but also self-realization.
I have made meditation a foundation of my life since before I went to graduate school in 1989. I have learned many different types of meditation and many techniques and resources to make meditation very accessible to people new to it. I’ve been to quite a number of retreats with different teachers and am very happy meeting you wherever you are at with this. The type of therapy I do is mindfulness based, and has been since I started in the early 1990s. One of the pieces of feedback I get from most of my clients is that doing this type of work has lead to developing their own meditation practice. The more you do mindfulness based psychotherapy, the easier it gets to meditate. We will naturally clear blocks to becoming present with yourself and deepen your concentration and focus. Going inside will become an enjoyable resource and a natural part of your day. Brainspotting works through a relaxed embodied state of mindfulness which is actually assisted meditation. I can teach you to use the exciting brain science and technology of Brainspotting on your own to shift into more nourishing states of consciousness and also to work through triggers on your own. I can help you work through barriers to creating your own practice and discovering the style of meditation that works best for you. Research is showing us virtually on a daily basis that stress management, and particularly regular meditation, changes the brain and helps us respond to life in a much more easeful way. It is a vital component to resolving health issues, trauma and addictions. I have also been practicing yoga and dance for most of my life and am always interested in helping people discover their own way of being embodied and present. I love giving my clients tools and resources so that they can do more and more of their inner work between sessions and build a foundation for health and happiness which will be a permanent life long resource for self-care. For example, I love the “Insight Timer” app.
